2. In Indonesia, U.S management books are a seller. Many businessmen used it as a guide to run their business. One thing missing from the books is the cultural factor. Whish is considered to be an unimportant aspect in the west. What happen in Indonesia is the otherwise. In Indonesia culture is always being a major issue in all aspects of life.

First example is the book Never Wrestle with a Pig (Penguin) by Mark McCormack is full of business ideas. He suggests and gives tips that include resisting the urge to dominate at meetings, ending the day on time, and encouraging staff to be creative. If those theories can be applied in the correct way, it will be really helpful in running the business. Once again culture is the obstacle. For example in the west, to ask the employees directly is an ordinary thing to do, but in Indonesia a boss who ask the employees will be regarded incapable to lead, a conservative way of think. End the day on time is also a habit in the west and a good habit to have, but in Indonesia what happen is that being late in the office means to spend time late at the office just to talk about unimportant things just to wait before the boss go home first.

Second example is taken from the books Built to last by James Collins and

Jerry Porras (Harper) is a guide to the “successful habits of visionary companies”.

Collins also wrote Good to Great (Harper) claims .

Once again, those theory just does not going well in Indonesia. For example, Collins said trusted the employees in one key to succeed, but in Indonesia suspicion is one of the most important aspects to success.

There is still many other example of this kind of thing. But, the conclusion is even though foreign management books are big seller in Indonesia, but at the end of the day, the Indonesians has its own way to get money.

3. Advantages and Disadvantages of Foreign Textbooks and Foreign Lectures

As an Indonesian student who studies with foreign textbooks is a quite new challenge for me. At the other hand, it also gives me advantages. There are at least three advantages that I can get by studying with foreign textbooks are to add the list of my vocabulary of English words. So far I have find hundreds of new English words on my textbooks. Words I never see and hear before are appearing in the textbooks. It is really helpful to me. We can also find more examples in foreign textbooks. After the explanation, I can find examples that make me easier to understand the explanation. The example are not always fiction, many of them are also fact. I also feel more driven to study because of the fact that I must study harder to understand the subjects since they are describe on foreign language. If I do not study harder, and read the foreign textbooks I will not understand the subjects. So it gives me a lot more motivation to study.

Not only advantages, I also feel get disadvantages by studying with foreign textbooks also brings disadvantages. Firstly, sometimes I get confuse with the explanation because I did not understand what the meaning of the words or sentences. It sometimes leads me to misunderstand the meaning. Secondly, it is not all of students understand English, so using foreign textbooks mean extra work to understand the subject. It is also a disadvantage. Lastly, I also find it a little bit hard to summarize a topic on the book.

It is not only that I have to study with foreign textbooks, but I also being taught by foreign lectures. Being taught by foreign lectures also has advantages. Personally, I can get to practice my English with the foreign lectures. I can get a chance to communicate in English not just at class but also outside the class. For example, when I want to ask about assignment and other things related to general English subject or maybe just to say hello. Having a foreign lectures also give other advantage to me which is to learn or to see the culture of foreigner. It might not be culture in the meaning of origin culture or things like that, but how they behave, how they interact with other, and how they communicate in general. Another advantages for me is that I can also get to know things that I do not get from Indonesian lectures.

Being taught by foreign lectures can give disadvantages too. Like sometimes students find need a little bit hard to communicate with the lectures. That is because of the languages barriers. In fact are not all students can speak English fluently. Another disadvantage is that foreign lectures can get wrong meaning with the students act. It is probably because of different cultural background. What I mean is that sometimes student act like usual but maybe foreign lecture have another meaning on it. The last one is that being taught by foreign lectures is that foreign lectures is too strict and too discipline while the Indonesia students are really not used to that condition due to the fact that most of Indonesian are lazy. So the good intention by foreign lectures can become a bad one for students.
